If you are a permanent resident of Canada and meet specific statutory requirements, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship through naturalization (Grant of Citizenship).
This process involves meeting physical presence, language ability, and knowledge requirements set out under the Citizenship Act and related regulations.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for Canadian citizenship as an adult (18 years of age or older), you must generally:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately before the date of your application
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French, where required
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of Canada, including the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizenship
- Not be under a removal order
- Not be prohibited due to criminality, security, or other grounds under the Citizenship Act.
- Attend a citizenship ceremony and take the Oath of Citizenship, if approved.
Eligibility requirements are assessed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee approval.
