Canadian Citizenship for Adopted Children Born Outside Canada
If your child was born outside of Canada and legally adopted by a Canadian citizen, you may be able to pass on your Canadian citizenship to your adopted child.
Who Can Pass On Canadian Citizenship?
Adoptive parents can pass on Canadian citizenship to an adopted child if at least one parent:
-
Was born in Canada, or
-
Was a naturalized Canadian citizen at the time of the adoption.
Once granted, a Canadian Citizenship Certificate allows your child to live, study, or work in Canada without needing a visa or permit.
The Canadian Citizenship Process for an Adopted Child
The process of obtaining Canadian citizenship for an adopted child involves two key steps:
-
Confirmation of Canadian Citizenship of the Adoptive Parent(s): This step verifies that at least one adoptive parent was a Canadian citizen at the time of the adoption.
-
Adoptee’s Citizenship Application: This assesses whether the adopted child is eligible for a direct grant of Canadian citizenship under Section 5.1 of the Citizenship Act.
